An understanding of how planet Earth works should be an essential part of every young person's education and is necessary for the sustainability of Earth environments and resources.

Through development officers and forum members throughout Scotland we work with teachers, schools, colleges, public institutions, science centres, museums, industry and universities to address the challenges facing Earth Science education.

Membership of SESEF is free. To join please complete the form on our contact page.

Our objectives are

  • to promote understanding and teaching of Earth Science, including geology, physical geography, meteorology, astronomy, geophysics and oceanography in Scottish schools and colleges
  • to improve access to Earth Science education for all young people in Scotland to use the Earth Sciences and their relevance to issues of resources and the environment to promote science in education
  • to provide training and support for teachers in the Earth Sciences
  • to discuss the scope of Earth Science education and promote the longer-term curricular evolution of an Earth Science syllabus from 5 to 18 and into further education
