RIGS are defined according to four UK agreed criteria:

  1. educational,
  2. research,
  3. historical and
  4. aesthetic.

Scotland's RIGS groups select and list sites in a process known as designation which echoes the statutory network of SSSI. The process involves landowners, local councils and all those with an interest in conserving, and interpreting sites.

To date in Scotland, the emphasis has very much been the designation of sites for use in educational and interpretation. However, the aspiration is to have designations echoing all the founding criteria. Such as localities of historical importance used by famous Scottish Geologists.

In time it is hoped that there will be a 'RIGS in Scotland' network of groups.
