Dolerite-picrite sill, Duntulm Castle, Skye

Part of the Palaeogene Trotternish Sill Complex forming the headland at Duntulm Castle, Skye.  The rock is an olivine-rich, orange-brown weathering dolerite. It illustrates compositional variation containing about 20 dark-coloured bands that are in the order of a metre or so in thickness.  © Colin MacFadyen/SNH
