Felsite sill on sandstone, Drumadoon, Arran ŠP&A Macdonald/SNH

Intruded into Triassic sedimentary rock, the Drumadoon Sill on Arran is composed of felsite.  Formed during the Palaeogene around 60 million years ago, this thick sheet of rock illustrates columnar jointing, formed as the once molten rock cooled and contracted. © P&A Macdonald/SNH
