Edinburgh International Science Festival: Exploring North Berwick's Rocks
The rocks of North Berwick tell us about a dramatic episode in Scotland’s history when East Lothian was rocked by volcanic eruptions that buried the land under lava and ash, while beneath the surface magma oozed into underground chambers and cracks. What happened away back in the past created today's landscape with its islands, hills and rocky headlands all made of hard igneous rocks.
Edinburgh International Science Festival: The man who discovered time
In the 18th century, James Hutton – farmer, scientist and member of the Scottish enlightenment – used the rocks of Scotland as evidence for his 'theory of the Earth'. This radical treatise argued against a strict biblical interpretation of the creation of the earth just a few thousand years ago, and instead proposed a world with 'no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end'. Widely recognised as the father of modern geology, Hutton is largely unknown to the general public. The story of his life illustrates science at work, and the rocks he used to gather evidence for his theory are still visible today.

Geowalks: Dunbar Promenade
Explore the rocky headland of Dunbar, and discover how the shape of the coastline is related to different kinds of rock, all formed millions of years ago. Volcanoes erupting here left behind hard igneous rocks that have withstood erosion better than the surrounding sedimentary rocks, creating the headland of Dunbar and shaping the surrounding coast. This has given a good defensive position for Dunbar Castle, and a sheltered anchorage; crucial components of the history of the town.

Geowalk at the Water of Leith
Edinburgh's river has a varied character, reflecting the underlying rock and dramatic episodes of erosion associated with the melting of glacial ice. This short walk explores the river between Stockbridge and the Dean Bridge.
The shape of the coastline here is controlled by the combination of sedimentary rocks and dolerite, which has formed from the intrusion of magma into the older sedimentary rocks. This walk along the coast to the west of Gullane will include dolerite headlands and sandy bays where the softer rocks have eroded away.
Ever wanted to journey to the centre of a real volcano? This is your chance; touch lava flows hundreds of millions of years old and marvel at our magma. We can even throw in a trip to the beach - all within Holyrood Park. Suitable for 8+ years. Under 18's must be accompanied by an adult.
