A short, but rocky and wild stretch of coast takes us back through time. Starting at Cove Harbour we find sandstones and other rocks of Carboniferous age, and then as we walk south and around the corner we find the Old Red Sandstone of Pease Bay. Amongst the varied layers of sedimentary rock, watch out for the giant concretions!

A walk along the coast and up North Berwick Law to discover the varied story of the local volcanoes. The rocks on the shore were formed by a series of violent volcanic eruptions, with volcanic ash showering out of the sky into a shallow sea. We can now stroll through the ancient volcanoes and view the offshore islands, each with a different story.

Dr Neil Clark (Hunterian Museum) will walk and talk and take you to see the footprints made by the “hand-beast of Blackwaterfoot” in sands that are over 245 million years old. Just north of the cliffs of Drumadoon, over 50 of these footprints were found in the last 10 years. Now more have been found, numbering in their hundreds, along the south coast of Arran. Meet at the Golf Club tearoom for a short talk beforehand.

Notable features include: fossilised Stigmaria, a sill altered to dolerite (white trap), James Young's oil shale, an exceptionally well preserved stromatolite bed, a small scale multi-fault system and a pair of sills with large titanaugite crystals and intrusive contacts.
