Midlothian fossils – from ocean floor to steamy swamps

10/10/2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In the heart of the Pentland Hills you can find the remains of ancient sea creatures that lived in the Iapetus Ocean more than 400 million years ago. The ocean is long gone, but there are signs of what life was like from the fossils and rocks that have been preserved. Nearly a 100 million years later, the rest of the rocks of Midlothian were formed in very different conditions, on land close to the Equator, in rivers, swamps and shallow seas. Fossils from this period include trees, shells and (very rarely) amphibians.

This public event will give you the opportunity to hear more about the fossils of Midlothian from experts from the Edinburgh Geological Society. Bring along any fossils or rocks that you would like identified, we’re happy to answer any questions.
